Bad Hair Day
I have had a few of these in my time, but nothing so bad to speak of....until now.
I recently took the plunge and I don't say that lightly, as it took me way too long, years actually. But I took the plunge and got my hair cut. I think my hair has been long since about age 15. By long, I mean at least to the middle of my back. It was short above my ears in grade school and I have never had it cut since. 40 years. I honestly felt as if it didn't grow fast....or at all some years. It seemed as I looked at pictures, it was always the same length. But I did always trim it myself and sometimes a couple of inches. I never had good luck with going to salons either. I think I can count on one hand how many times I have been to one in my life.
Once in the early 80's I ask one to cut my bangs. For some reason she told me when you cut bangs you have to cut them from the back of your head...Not knowing better I allowed this and for me it wasn't a good look. But I dealt with it until they grew out. Another time in the early 90's I went in and paid about $75 to get my hair french braided, it took 3 of them to do it and it was out by the time I got home....
Then in 2006, I realized I needed a change as my hair was so long I was sitting on it when I had it in a ponytail. So I went and ask for it to be cut up to the middle of my back and I also again wanted bangs, as I had worn it this way for so long, I was losing some hair up front, so I needed help. This lady told me I only needed less than an inch cut off. She said my hair was in good shape. That was fine, But I did want some of the length cut. She argued this for a while and then said whatever I wanted but she didn't think I would like it. I told her it was ok, as long as she didn't cut it above my shoulders it would be fine.....
She cut it above my shoulders. If that were all, she kept me turned away from the mirror and I had no idea of how much she was cutting until a woman came in and asked if I was donating my hair....the salon lady calmly said oh I didn't think of that, and I just said she isn't cutting that much....little did I know there were tons of it on the floor. Now keep in mind I never go to salons.....Then all of a sudden she said she was done and I ask where my bangs were and she suggested I had a widows peak and couldn't have bangs. I don't have a widows peak. She claimed I had to leave in a hurry as she had to leave. I was devastated when I got home. Not only was my hair cut above my shoulders, but it was shorter in the back than on the sides and one side was longer, about an inch and a half than the other. And my problem still existed as to what to do with it as I didn't need to put it in a ponytail and quite frankly now I couldn't, but couldn't do anything else with it either! I tried to get back in for this lady to fix what she messed up, but she avoided me for weeks. For the rest of the year I don't think I did much in the way of going out. Sad, but true. I was a bit gun shy of going to another salon, sort of afraid of what to ask for but more afraid of what they would do with my hair as up to now I wasn't having good luck. Which brings me to about 6 months ago. I had met a lady at a salon while getting more hairspray. Told her of my wishes for my hair. She seemed nice and said I didn't have a widows peak either and could easily have some bangs. She really seemed to know exactly what to do with me.
Which brings me to about 4 weeks ago. Yes it took me 6 months but I finally went to her and she cut my hair, and I love it. Not sure if its me, but it literally took a weight off of my shoulders....(no pun intended) I haven't wore my hair in a ponytail since. I haven't used hairspray either. Something I just love! I don't think I have worn my hair down for over 7 years. The Shankster seemed to love it too and that was worth a lot to me even though it only cost $20!!
Which brings me to last week. The week of December 13th. This week will be etched in my mind forever. I had gotten up early and washed my hair. Had a bit of privacy as dad was gone and the Shankster was getting some much needed sleep. I decided to take this time to use my new ROUND BRUSH WITH LITTLE WIRE BRISTLES and LITTLE ORANGE TIPS. I have never had one of these. But the Shankster was spoiling me and got me one. The instructions said to wash hair, curl with brush and use hair dryer to dry and since it was ceramic it would heat up good. So I used it on my bangs. Looked great. Decided to use it further and took some hair from the top of my head. This was the beginning of a bad move on my part.
Took about an inch of hair and rolled it into brush, started to dry it and thought wow this will take too long. Went to take it out and it didn't budge. I thought I would die. After 20 minutes I went to relax my arms as they got too tired and the brush just kept GRABBING other parts of my hair. I panicked. I went twice to see if the Shankster was awake for some help. He wasn't. But after another 10 minutes of getting absolutely no where, I decided to wake him.
To wrap this us a bit..... After 3 hours, 1 pepsi, using tweezers, picks, forks, water, Pam olive oil spray, conditioner, and then scissors and nail cutters to cut the orange tipped wirey bristles off to hopefully roll my hair off the brush, Frank was at a loss. No matter what we did, more hair seemed to keep grabbing onto the round brush, there was such a matted mess there now, I felt hopeless, not to mention the pain. The pain was down to my eyeball. And now I had wires, and tiny round orange thingy's in the matted hair, not to mention all over the room.
He then had the bright idea that he could use a Hammer, yes I said HAMMER to break the ceramic part of the brush and then pick it all out of my hair. I actually agreed to this. I even grabbed the Hammer, and gave it to him and laid my head down on the table for him to take the shot. I believe I was at this point, delirious. After several tries and it didn't even budge the brush I could see he was freaking out. He was shaking and everything. Poor thing he did try.
So I took the scissors and gave them to him and said cut it.......he didn't want to, but he did.
talk about a bad hair day.
Bill this one is for you. One, of my most memorable moments of 2010.
